(By Tim Haddock) The Canyon softball team won its wild-card game in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. The Canyon girls shut out Canyon Springs, 1-0.

Freshman Jessica Goodspeed made an impressive playoff debut for Canyon. She pitched five scoreless innings and gave up only three hits.

Canyon’s Julianna Carlos knocked in the only run of the game with a double in the fourth inning. Paige Johnson doubled earlier in the inning and scored on Carlos’ double.

Sophomore Brittany Workman completed the shutout pitching the final two innings and sending the Canyon Springs batters down in order.


Four teams from the Foothill League and six teams from the Santa Clarita Valley are in the CIF Southern Section baseball playoffs.

West Ranch and Saugus start the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs in the wild-card round on Wednesday. West Ranch plays Chaminade and Saugus plays on the road against Alemany.

Hart, the Foothill League champion, starts playoffs on Friday. The Indians play the winner of the wild-card game between Orange Lutheran and Newport Harbor.

The Valencia baseball team opens playoffs against the winner of the wild-card game between Thousand Oaks and Martin Luther King.

The Santa Clarita Christian baseball team is the No. 1 seed in the Southern Section Division 7 playoffs. The Cardinals open the playoffs on Friday.

The Albert Einstein Academy baseball team is home for its wild-card game in the Southern Section Division 7 playoffs against Coast Christian on Wednesday.


Abbey Weitzeil from Saugus High won two CIF Southern Section titles and broke two national records at Riverside Community College.

She won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle titles at the Southern Section meet. She won the 50 freestyle 21.98 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 47.91 seconds, both tops among high school swimmers in the nation.

Weitzeil has won six CIF Southern Section swim titles in her high school career.

Valencia freshman Nikol Popov won two Southern Section titles at the meet, too. She won the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke.

Hart Cole Cogswell was a double winner at the meet. He won the 100-yard freestyle title and was on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team.


Three players from College of the Canyons will compete in the 103rd California Amateur Championship at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad in June.

Sidney Wolf, Michael Stewart and Howard Bernstein finished in the top six of the California Amateur Qualifying Tournament at Crystalaire Country Club. Wolf, who won the California Community College Athletic Association individual state chamopionship, won the qualifying tournament with a 3-under 69. He made four birdies.

Stewart and Bernstein finished in a tie for third place. Both shot even-par 72. Stewart eagled the par-5 12 hole and added two birdies in his round.

Bernstein made an eagle on 18th hole and had two birdies in his round.

The California Amateur Championship starts with a 36-hole stroke play tournament and finishes with a 32-player field in match play.


Keiona Mathews from College of the Canyons will continue her college basketball career at Texas A&M International.

Mathews was selected to the All-State team and was the Western State Conference, North Division player of the year.

She was second in the state in scoring at 24.8 points per game and broke five school records at COC.

Texas A&M International is an NCAA Division II school in the Heartland Conference.


The Foothill League football teams are switching divisions. The teams will play in the newly formed West Valley Division in the CIF playoffs, moving out of the Northern Division.

The West Valley Division will be teams from the Baseline League, South Coast League, Southwestern League and Sunset League.

Hart won the Northern Division championship last year and played Valencia in the championship game.
